7 Useful Houston Apartment Websites in 2026

Finding the right Houston apartment website can save weeks of scrolling. Houston renters can search online through general listing sites, free apartment-locator services, and public county, city and state housing tools. We compared seven Houston apartment websites based on three things: how much real building-level detail they give you, how Houston-specific the information is, and whether you can actually use the site without talking to anyone first. Updated October 2026.

Houston Apartment Websites Compared

1. HoustonApartmentBuildings.com

Best for: comparing buildings side by side before you ever contact anyone.

HoustonApartmentBuildings.com is a free, independent index of 176 apartment buildings in the Houston area, each with 50 or more units, across twelve neighborhood groups, with one permanent page per building and structured, per-building data: street address, unit count, floor count, year built, and the building’s own website. It also publishes a citywide data breakdown — building age, size and neighborhood counts — so you can see how a building or neighborhood compares before narrowing your search. The directory does not record building amenities, so confirm pets, parking, laundry, air conditioning and fitness facilities directly with each leasing office. There’s no locator to call and no lead form to fill out; it’s a free, self-serve reference built around the buildings themselves rather than individual unit listings, and it carries no rents, rankings, reviews or paid placement.

2. AptAmigo

Best for: renters who want a free, personal apartment hunter.

AptAmigo is an apartment-locating service that operates in Houston among nine U.S. cities. A locator contacts you to discuss your needs, does the searching, recommends buildings, and handles tour-day logistics — the service is free to renters because, per AptAmigo, it provides marketing support to the buildings it partners with. It’s a good fit if you’d rather hand off the legwork than do your own research, though you’re working through an agent rather than browsing raw data yourself.

3. Harris Central Appraisal District — Property Search

Best for: checking the official public record on a specific building.

The Harris Central Appraisal District (HCAD) offers a free online property search and an interactive parcel viewer for looking up property records. It isn’t a rental listing site, but it’s a free way to check who owns a building and its basic recorded details before you sign a lease. Properties outside Harris County are appraised by their own county’s appraisal district.

4. Houston Housing Authority

Best for: renters looking for public housing or Housing Choice Vouchers.

The Houston Housing Authority (HHA) states that its mission is “to improve lives by providing quality, affordable housing options and promoting education and economic self-sufficiency.” Its Housing Choice Voucher program provides tenant-based assistance to low-income families, seniors and persons with disabilities for rental units chosen by the tenant in the private market, with HHA paying participating property owners directly to offset the difference between the tenant’s payment and the rent. According to HUD, HHA administers approximately 2,600 public housing units and 18,900 Housing Choice Voucher units.

5. TDHCA Vacancy Clearinghouse

Best for: a free statewide search for rent-reduced apartments.

The Vacancy Clearinghouse is a free directory from the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs. You can search by city, county, or ZIP code for rent-reduced apartments and see rents, amenities, and units for persons with disabilities. It covers only properties that received TDHCA funding, so for other affordable options it points renters to local public housing authorities and the state’s Help for Texans page.

6. Apartments.com

Best for: a large raw inventory of listings, if you want to cast a wide net.

Apartments.com is one of the biggest general apartment websites in the country, with tens of thousands of Houston rentals listed alongside its nationwide database. Listings show pricing by floor plan, amenity tags, and current specials, with filters and a map view. The tradeoff for that scale is depth — you get unit-level marketing details, but not the kind of structured, comparable building data a Houston-specific directory can offer.

7. Zillow

Best for: renters already using Zillow for buying/selling research.

Of all the Houston apartment websites on this list, Zillow is probably the most familiar name — its rental listings sit alongside its well-known home-sale and Zestimate tools. It’s convenient if you’re already comparing renting against buying, though its Houston-specific building detail is thinner than a dedicated local resource.

Methodology note: this list of Houston apartment websites reflects how much Houston-specific, building-level detail each resource makes available to renters directly, and how easily that information can be used without contacting an agent first. It will be revisited periodically as these services change.
